My Abuelo used to peel them for me\u2014 warm brilliant <\/span>
\nspheres of varying sizes. He\u2019d tear back their rinds in <\/span>
\ntiny bits, as much as his aging fingers could manage, <\/span>
\nthen wrap them in plain white paper towels & place them <\/span>
\nin proper yellow plastic bags, the ones from Sedanos. <\/span>
\nHe had his way of loving.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Too busy fumbling with the texture of my shame, I never <\/span>
\ncared for citrus. I felt fruit a mess in my lap, in my <\/span>
\nunlearned hands\u2014 too complicated in my mouth which <\/span>
\nwatered for nights out, bubbly, betraying sleep. When I left <\/span>
\nMiami, I didn\u2019t think he\u2019d leave us\u2014 leveled myself more <\/span>
\nworried to think Abuela would go. We didn\u2019t know he\u2019d be <\/span>
\nthe first, departing that November, or that they would meet <\/span>
\nin dreams until just a year past when she\u2019d pursue him to <\/span>
\nthe soil.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I have carried many griefs & I can\u2019t say which is <\/span>
\nbigger but today, I wait for the Tangelo & cry<\/span>
\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 for the sting of citrus<\/span>
\nin tiny splinters on my fingers.<\/span><\/p>\n
