A <em>fuga<\/em> for when my peers from both worlds tell me I have two accents; a last resort for the moments that\u00a0 my \u201cEnglish is not very good-looking\u201d and I\u2019m told, \u201c<em>tu espa\u00f1ol \u2018t\u00e1 mal\u00edsimo<\/em>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Spanglish.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It is both a departure from and an arrival to my parents\u2019 native <em>campo<\/em>; it is <strong>my dual passport<\/strong> permitting frequent travel between two societies. My credentials in the debate between who is a better rapper: Daddy Yankee or Jay-Z, El L\u00e1piz or Nas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It is simultaneous acculturation into two cultures\u2014<strong>the marked centerline in a game of tug of war<\/strong>. Spend too much time on one side and you risk losing the other.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><em>Abel Veloz is a first-gen Dominican-American, US Army Veteran, and occasional experiential writer from Hudson County, NJ.
