\nI carry the boombox of a Bronx summer block party<\/span>
\nhigher on my back.<\/span>
\nI\u2019m in love with the loud of my voice,<\/span>
\nI treat you well with my truth.<\/span>
\nThe macaw and I be beefin\u2019 over who\u2019s loudest.<\/span>
\nSpaceships screech and halt in their paths.<\/span>
\nI make melodies follow my lead.<\/span>
\n———————–<\/span>I\u2019m not an apology.<\/span>
\nI will be that abuela with too many stories,<\/span>
\nthe glitter and twinkle\u2014<\/span>
\nor maybe a honeybun sweet, stuck on my cheek.<\/span>
\nMy loud is pollo frito, Utz chips blowin\u2019 in the wind,<\/span>
\na frizzy trenza reaching higher,<\/span>
\nhigher teasing the trees<\/span>
\nmimicking the branches brown.<\/span>
\nMy loud is the click-clack<\/em> of chancletas<\/span>
\nslapping street and linoleum.<\/span>
\nBullosa, me dicen,<\/span>
\nla que trae la fiesta, pero por aqu\u00ed<\/span>
\n—————<\/span>el silencio is stronger than the hood on my neck.<\/span>
\nI carry the drip on my sweater<\/span>
\nin the company of professionals calling<\/span>
\nmy accent an important part of \u201cthe community.\u201d<\/span>
\nI am the loud that tames the boom with the same high-pitch<\/span>
\ncackle-laugh, remixing assimilation.<\/span>
\nThe same one that cost me the respect of my family.<\/span>
\nThe loud that lost the fight of being good enough<\/span>
\nto be invited to the family chats<\/span>
\nto inside jokes.<\/span>
\nOr maybe the loud that assumes<\/span>
\nchange equates a loss of self.<\/span>
\nMy loud kicks it with confusion,<\/span>
\ncries with orgullo when another loud bitch arrives<\/span>
\nso we can treat each other like equals.<\/span>
\nMy loud rests by the wall when language escapes.<\/span>
\nMy loud is never enough<\/span>
\nor too much<\/span>
\nor just the same as the rest.<\/span>
\nIs it supposed to make sense?<\/span>
\nDa igual, I finesse this life anyway.<\/span><\/p>\n
