Creeps in all sloth-like<\/span>
\nclaws extend from<\/span>
\nyour childhood. <\/span>
\nForces me<\/span>
\nto reflect on the absence<\/span>
\nof your touch, <\/span>
\nhow I survived alone for days <\/span>
\nas you catered to your own wounds,<\/span>
\nunaware I was slowly evolving into one of them.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sleep entices, then intoxicates.<\/span>
\nMy body pushes through<\/span>
\nwithout rest. <\/span>
\nHallucinations so vivid <\/span>
\nI hear voices of the dead<\/span>
\npleading I join them. <\/span>
\nOn the J train, they call to me again; <\/span>
\nbetween the muffled <\/span>
\ncrackling of loudspeakers, <\/span>
\nthey urge me to leap.<\/span><\/p>\n

All the while feeling insignificant,<\/span>
\nlonging for this vast world to engulf my entire being.<\/span>
\nAt work, I greet with a smile.<\/span>
\nMy teeth bleached.<\/span>
\nMy curls in perfect ringlets.<\/span>
\nThe windows on the eighth floor<\/span>
\nlure me. <\/span>
\nMy forehead<\/span>
\nagainst the cold glass;<\/span>
\ntoo bad for safety locks.<\/span><\/p>\n

But then it\u2019s Saturday morning, <\/span>
\nmy children’s laughter, <\/span>
\nmy daughter <\/span>
\ncracking an egg into the batter. <\/span>
\nThe shell mixing in.<\/span>
\nMy son, licking<\/span>
\nthe corners of his sticky mouth, <\/span>
\nasks for more syrup, <\/span>
\nbrings our plates<\/span>
\nto the sink before going to his room,<\/span>
\nstops to hug me, and tells me he loves me.<\/span><\/p>\n

My daughter looks up and smiles, <\/span>
\nshowing<\/span>
\nthe small gap she inherited<\/span>
\nfrom her father. <\/span>
\nI find myself falling, falling.<\/span><\/p>\n

My forehead pushes up<\/span>
\nagainst the cold glass, my breath<\/span>
\nforms a fog in the shape of a cloud.<\/span>
\nI watch it slowly disappear.<\/span><\/p>\n

Thank God for safety locks.<\/span><\/p>\n

Born in the Dominican Republic and raised in Corona, Queens, Koylan\u2019s exposure to Caribbean culture, music, and language infuses her writing, through which she explores her Dominicanyol upbringing and portrays her dual identity.
