Dice la sociedad que debo desenredar nudos, nudos en mi identidad, en la mente, en el coraz\u00f3n en mi corona, nudos en mi garganta. Los desenredo con un peine que se siente como un rastrillo impulsado por la sociedad que penetra mi tronco.<\/span><\/p>\n

Y, me desenredo. Y, espero que tambi\u00e9n se desenrede la gente y sus prejuicios,<\/span>
\nque me acepten y me quieran y que yo me acepte y me quiera a\u00fan si no puedo desenredarme.<\/span>
\nMi historia es enredada pero para que la entiendas tendr\u00eda que explicarte de d\u00f3nde vengo,<\/span>
\ncontarte la historia de mis ancestros.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a1Ay! No me hales. No me hales los cabellos. No me hales mi esencia.<\/span><\/p>\n

Eso me quema. Me quema el cuero. El qu\u00edmico me quema. T\u00fa me quemas.<\/span>
\nSus miradas me queman. El alma me quema.<\/span><\/p>\n

D\u00e9jame mi cabello. D\u00e9jame mis rizos, mis ondas, mi paj\u00f3n, mi mo\u00f1o. D\u00e9jame mi corona.<\/span><\/p>\n

Lissette Acosta Corniel, Ph.D.,\u00a0is an associate professor of Latin American and Caribbean studies in the Department of Ethnic and Race Studies at the Borough of Manhattan Community College. She is a historian whose work focuses on gender, slavery, and resistance in early colonial Hispaniola and Santo Domingo. She has published several articles and book chapters and is the editor of the book\u00a0Transatlantic Bondage: Slavery and Freedom in Spain, Santo Domingo, and Puerto Rico\u00a0<\/i>(SUNY Press, 2024). Acosta Corniel is also interested\u00a0in digital humanities.
